B.Ed. or Bachelor of Education is a 2 year professional course that is done after graduation or postgraduation to work as a teacher in schools. According to the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) it is mandatory for all teachers to have a B.Ed. course.
To make teaching profession of choice instead of leftover, in February 2019, the Human Resource Development Ministry has proposed the 4-year B.Ed. course. Interested candidates can opt the course in three types. Candidates can undertake either BA - B.Ed., B.Sc. - B.Ed. and B.Com. - B.Ed. One can choose this integrated four-year B.Ed. course which will save one year instead of five years (3 years bachelor degree + 2 years B.Ed.).
Candidates with both graduation and post graduation degree in a relevant field of study are eligible for the B.Ed. programme offered by various reputed institutions/universities. However the graduates must have scored 50% to 55% in their qualifying degree exam and the postgraduates have to score atleast 55% marks in their respective qualifying degree exam to be eligible to apply for B.Ed. programme.
The admission process in B.Ed. programme is both an entrance exam based and merit based, where some institutions conduct an entrance exam for the eligible candidates and some consider the marks of the candidates in their qualifying degree examination.
There is usually no upper age limit to apply for B.Ed. programme. However, some universities and colleges keep the minimum age limit for candidates from 19-21 years.
